So, these Barn Quilts!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It’s no secret that I love spreading Barn Quilts all around, but I can’t possibly do it all myself. So, teaching classes is how I plan to spread the Barn Quilt craze, helping folks decorate our world with color and the good feelings that come from sharing your creativity.

Here are just a few of the Barn Quilts that were created last Friday at the Skyline Grange, north of Portland!

Some of the questions that came up were interesting, such as. “What is the correct size to make a Barn Quilt?”  Well, in my classes we make 2′ x 2′ squares.  They can be completed in a 6 hour class, and some complex designs are included, though most are fairly easy to draw.  For example an Ohio Star is offered, but not a Feathered Star which is too complex a design for your first Barn Quilt.  I think of the classes as an opportunity to learn the technique, not to make the family heirloom! To answer the question requires some explanation.  The 2’x2′ squares fit well on a pump house, garden shed, garage or fence, but might get lost on a big barn.  It also depends on the distance the Barn Quilt will be seen from.  Also, a more complex design may be more suited to a larger board such as 3’x3′, or 4’x4′.  I’ve seen a wide variety of sizes of Barn Quilts while I’m out driving and no matter the size it is a nice surprise to spot one! I feel like the answer should be this: There are no rules!  Make and use the size of Barn Quilt that suits your space!  I have small 1’x1′ squares available, and have seen that they can sometimes be made 8’x8′. I’ve seen that some are painted directly onto a barn which must be a little challenging, considering the rough barnwood.

One of my favorite reasons to love these classes, is that I get to see the finished project!  Nice work.  My next classes will be at the NW Quilt Expo in Portland on September 26 & 27, go to their website to register. After that I’ll be at the Stitchin’ Post in Sisters, OR  (October 8th) and at Tillamook for the Partners for Rural Innovation Center on October 12th.

It’s not too late! Quilts and More Still Available!

There’s still time to pick up your copy of Quilts and More, Summer 2018.  My quilt, Block Party is on the cover, and it is full of fun projects, large and small.  I plan to do some embroidery this summer inspired by this magazine!

Check out your local bookstore, I know Barnes and Noble has it, as well as quilt shops, craft stores, grocery stores, and if you’re in the PNW check good old BiMart!

One thing I love about this magazine is the alternate color-way version that is included, and for my quilt pattern, Joanna Burgarino, Editor, made a miniature wall hanging/table topper!  Also, in the pull-out there are COLORING diagrams for each quilt included.  It gives you so much confidence when you are choosing fabrics to know how the colors work together as a whole!

So, get your copy, it’s not too late, Quilts and More, Summer 2018 will be on display until July 17th!

Interview at the Bee Hive!

Anna & Sheila in the Bee Hive!

I want to share a video with you today from Anna of “Quilt Roadies on You Tube” fame, you may also know her blog “Woolie Mammoth“.  We talked together a couple weeks ago after a class I taught at the Stitchin Post in Sisters, Oregon.  Anna was in the class and invited me to her home studio, The Bee Hive for a visit.  Well, as you can imagine, when two quilters get together we have SO MUCH to talk about, and now you get to hear some of it too!

Click through HERE to see the video!  We actually didn’t talk all that much about quilting! It features my currently most popular classes–I think you’ll enjoy it, and you will see how much fun we had together!

Upcycle/Recycle!

Well, it’s been rainy and windy for the last few days here in the Pacific Northwest! I thought I needed a pick-me-up, so I’m sharing a project that was featured in an article in the Fall/Winter issue of Make It Yourself.

These flower pot cover-ups are so cheerful and fun!  I especially love having something to set my Christmas poinsettia into that will fit with the rest of my Holiday decor, and what better use is there for a worn out Christmas sweater!!  Find out how to make them, and lots of other projects in the magazine, it’s available now at newstands.  The article has several designs from  Lisa of Towerhouse Quilts too, BONUS!

Check out Make It Yourself on facebook, they always have creative ideas to share!
